Wiki rabbit hole
Task: You will use Wikipedia as a resource to start engaging with games as a larger topic. You will spend at least an hour clicking through links on Wikipedia from the “Games” page in order to learn more about topics that interest you. Then, you will write a short reflection in this discussion post about what you learned.
Audience: Your peers in English 102
Purpose: To share your main takeaways from your Wikipedia reading over the week.
Requirements to earn a Complete grade: Answer all of the summary and response question in the prompt and be sure your work is in your own words, unless you are quoting it with attribution. Please also “like” two other posts by your peers that you find interesting.
Instructions:
For the rest of this week, please spend some time skimming through the Wikipedia entry for “Game.” Here is the link: Wikipedia: “Game” Links to an external site.
Follow links that interest you about game genres or game theory. Follow the References at the bottom of wikipages to find articles, interviews, or videos related to the topic you’re interested in.
Use Wikipedia as a tool to explore topics and intersections with games that you find interesting and that might help you to brainstorming ideas for your own Game Project.
At the end of the week, write a paragraph or two about what you took away from your initial research:
What topics interested you? What pages or references did you check out? (List them!)
What are some things that you learned that surprised you?
What are some things that you learned that have helped you to develop ideas or interests for your Game Project?
How do you define a game after doing some research?
Please feel free to pull in quotations and reference different resources or authors you discovered while researching. However, remember that everything should be in your own words unless you are quoting another author! You are not required to comment on any other posts, but I recommend reading through what other people have read and discovered during their Wikipedia research. (Again, I recommend writing your responses to these questions in a Google Doc so you can hold onto these notes and potentially use them for future assignments!)
This is me writing this (the one that needs the reflection done)
Here is one person’s response to use as an example for what I was needing done. You don’t want this to sound too good, it has to come from someone that is not as smart as whomever is writing this for me. I just dont have time to do this at the moment. Thank you.
Someone from class example of what their response was.
Something that interested me is learning all the different types of games from video games, to card games, to pencil & paper games, dice games and so on forth! I was most interested by simulation games because the idea of virtual reality is insane to me. Who wouldn’t want to take a chance to escape your everyday life for some fantasy or mystical realm? A simulation takes things from a real life and lets you expand and do as you would with this “extra life” and just have fun with it! Although, they have so many other simulation games that correlate with sports, war, dancing, medical etc. I honestly did not know there was so many different things you could do with a simulation- I thought it would just be like playing a regular game on your xbox or ps4. Bouncing off of simulation, I clicked sports games. A famous game I know of that’s sport related is Madden, my dad loves to play it in his free time. Honestly he is a kid at heart and takes every second he can to escape reality. Something I found that well me in developing ideas is that I find simulation games super interesting and I believe it’s because of their realism. I adore the idea of being in a real life situation but instead of only being able to make one decision and having to live with it, I can go back or start over and do the opposite. I definitely think I am more of a video or online gaming individual so I think with this new knowledge of the online gaming world I will have new, unique ideas for my game project. If you were to ask me to define game after I just researched on Wiki, I would explain it as an escape from reality- a way to breakfree from our overpowered and manipulated world. Although, my definition could 100% be personal to me, it’s what I would describe game to someone else. A game is somewhere where you can spend time, hours on end, laughing, arguing, smiling, strategizing, and so much more on and yet maintain focus for so long. On average an individual can only stayed focus for about 15-20 minutes, so the ability to stay focused for an hour while playing a game is insane! There is so much a game can teach someone, and I believe it truly recognizes that when you’re doing something you love it can be fun and time will fly.
