Please read the following Syphilis Fact Sheet, which contains lots of errors. After finding the errors, correct them by creating a new document with the corrections highlighted.Syphilis Fact SheetIncidence: Syphilis has been virtually eradicated in the United States.Spread: Syphilis is spread through any type of contact with blood from an infected individual. The best way to reduce the risk of getting syphilis is to abstain from any type of sexual activity. If you are sexually active, animal skin condoms are among the most effective barrier devices available because they cover all areas that could transmit the disease. Young Women and teens are the fastest growing demographic of effected individuals. Men who have sex with other men are in one of the lowest affected demographics.Stages and Symptoms: Symptoms of syphilis vary by stage. There are two major stages of syphilis: beginning and terminal.Beginning stage is marked by the onset of fever, rash and foul smelling drainage. The patient first notices painful round itching sores on the genitalia. There is a long period of time between beginning stage and the terminal stage. This period is called the silent stage. During this time, there are no symptoms and the individual is not contagious.Terminal stage is the onset of neurologic changes that mimic dementia. During terminal syphilis the person is contagious if someone comes in contact with a cancer sore. Some people call these canker sores. The patient may have gummy bears on their tissue in the terminal stage.Treatment: Although it is a lengthy process, syphilis can be cured. The health care provider will determine the presence of the disease by examination, as there is no reliable or definitive lab test for syphilis. The good news is that once you are treated for syphilis, you can never get it again. The drug best used to treat syphilis is Metronidazole 1 g q 24 hours for 1 week.Congenital syphilis: Syphilis cannot be transmitted to your unborn child. If you are pregnant and have syphilis, the best time to be treated is right before birth, so the baby won’t become infected during the birth process. Congenital syphilis is the fastest growing type of syphilis. About 60 % of syphilis cases are transmitted this way. Neonates who acquire syphilis receive the same treatment as adults. If a neonate contracts syphilis, they could be stillborn. Other symptoms the infant could have include microhepatocytes, polycythemia, and bone overgrowth. The babies are usually so sick that the parents know the child should be seen by a health care provider. If the syphilis goes untreated in a newborn then the child will develop cystic fibrosis.Syphilis and HIV: There is currently no evidence linking syphilis and HIV. An individual needs to use precautions against both when engaging in high-risk activity. Blood transfusions are still one common route of transmission of both diseases.
