The first seven pairs have origins at the Thoracic Vertebra 1-7 and attach directly to the sternum.
Rib pairs 8,9 and 10 have origins at Thoracic Vertebrae 8-10 and attach to the sternum and ribs above them by Costal cartilage.
Rib pairs 11 & 12 have their origin at Thoracic Vertebrae 11 & 12 but do not attach to the front of the thoracic cavity. These are often referred to as the floating ribs.
