Here are some poll statistics regarding limiting freedom of speech. Note this poll is a few years old so take the phrase “fairly recent” with a small grain of salt. “A fairly recent poll found that 53% of Americans think that freedom of speech should not be allowed when it comes to criticism of religion, 20% believed that the government should approve stories in the newspapers before they’re published, and 23% felt that newspapers should not be allowed to criticize public officials. When it comes to freedom of speech and the arts, 51% of Americans thought that artists should not be permitted to display (in a public place) any art whose content might be offensive to others.” Do these statistics surprise you?
