Harry Hess of Princeton proposed the theory of plate tectonics. Hess had three main hypotheses that together formed a unified theory of how the Earth works: 1) the Earth is broken into a series of lithospheric plates; 2) the plates are in motion relative to each other, and 3) the crust is formed at ocean ridges and destroyed in subduction zones.
