Your assignment can be done individually or in pairs only. In the case of pairs, one assignment submission per pair is sufficient (ensure that both ID numbers are on the assignment).
A cover page is required and all three questions must be attempted.
All graphs should be presented within the body of the assignment under the relevant questions i.e. do not put all the graphs at the end of the assignment in an appendix.
A hard copy submission with a staple in the top left hand corner is required. The assignment is not to be over 10 single-sided pages in length.

1. The NBA data file includes salary info for 40 players in the NBA for 2013-2014.
Construct at least 3 plots of the salary variable, with a brief comment for each plot.
Compute the natural logarithm of salaries (call this variable Logsal), and construct at least 3 plots of this Logsal variable, with a brief comment for each plot.
Report if salaries or log-salaries follow a normal curve more closely, and justify your response.
2. Assume that final scores in a statistics unit follow a normal distribution with mean 70 and standard deviation 10. Using the Normal Table, find the scores which correspond to
the 5th percentile,
the 90th percentile,
the 99th percentile.
3. The electricity data file has data on electricity consumption in billions of kilowatt-hours (ELEC) and gross domestic product in billions of dollars (GDP) for the 30 most populous countries. Here, GDP is based on purchasing power parities to account for between-country differences in price levels. The data file can be used to investigate the claim that there is a linear association between electricity consumption and GDP, and how changes in electricity consumption tend to respond changes in GDP.
Report which variable should be the predictor and which should be the response for this investigation, with a brief comment why.
Report if the population value of the slope would be positive or negative, and briefly explain why.
Plot the data as a scatter plot. Add the least-squares line to the plot. Briefly describe the underlying pattern.
Identify the countries with the highest values of GDP, remove them from the dataset, and redraw the scatter plot and least-squares line. How does the scatter plot change?
Fit and present the appropriate simple regression model, relevant results and brief interpretations.
Report which country has a particular high electricity consumption and which country has a particular low electricity consumption relative to the pattern for the remaining countries after the highest GDP values have been removed? Why?
